If you’re going from Banaue to Sagada and take the usual jeepneys that await the travelers at the Autobus terminal, you will be arriving at Bontoc around 10pm. The sun will almost be halfway across the sky, the foggy morning will be gone and you’ll be an hour and a half from Sagada.

Bontoc is the capital of Mt. Province. As the name of the city and of the province itself suggest, the place is surrounded by mountains–all 360 degrees.

Click on the image to see a view of the city:

When I walked through its streets, I was expecting to see a different city, I was anticipating something (or anything for that matter) that would say I’m far away from Manila. Sadly, they looked the same.

The streets are dusty (perhaps because it was summer), the jeepneys are smoke-belching, Smart and Globe tarpaulins advertising unlimited textings are hanging from all the stores. It was an uneventful walk so I decided to proceed to Sagada instead.

Looking back, I should have visited the Bontoc Museum. That’s something I’m planning to include in my next itinerary.

From Bontoc to Sagada it will be another 1 to 1 1/2-hour ride on bumpy roads. I bet you’ll feel sleepy during this trip as I often did because it’s almost noon and you’ll be tired by then so sleep is actually a necessity.

You’ll know that you’re nearing Sagada because you will be awaken by the gradually cooling air. Don’t expect to see a huge ‘Welcome to Sagada’ sign. The chilly air will tell you that you’re finally there.
