This photo was taken on my 3rd trip to Sagada in July of 2006. I always get thrilled at seeing the look on somebody’s face whenever they encounter the rice terraces for the first time. They can’t believe that something so magnificent can be possible.

It’s a great thing that one of the routes that you can take to Sagada will pass by these Banaue Rice Terraces. Just make sure to ask your driver or guide to make a stopover at the viewpoint. There are actually a number of viewpoints, your guide should be able to find you one that is perfect for a photo op.

If you’re going to Sagada from Banaue, try to be on the road early in the morning so you can experience the eeriness of a foggy road.

What’s eerie about that? Actually for a lot of reasons but the best one would be driving almost completely blind for at least an hour until the the sun goes up and hot enough to be a kill-joy, that is, shoo the fog away.

Driving without seeing the road isn’t the true fun of the trip. It’s the fact that you’re traversing a long stretch of road that zig-zags around a whole mountain range. You’re on a road on a mountain that is part of the Sierra Madre. And the eeriest part of it? Remember that you are just a few feet from the ledge. That’s hundreds of feet down the mountainside! It’s a Russian roulette at the extreme.

I’m just saying all this because it’s fun to be on the road to Sagada on a foggy morning. You and your buddies can play a guessing game as to where the road ends and the big drop begins. Actually, it’s stupid to drive in the fog. The best and wisest course would be to stop and wait till the clouds float away.

Yeah, clouds. A fog’s a cloud, right? It’s heaven on Earth and you’re not yet in Sagada.

That’s the beauty of it.
